EIA & Planning Advice & Resource Efficiency

We conduct reviews, Environment Impact Assessment (EIA), offer planning advice and perform feasibility studies.

*Please monitor this page for information about case studies.

Due Diligence Audits

Reviews the environmental and health and safety liabilities associated with an organisation or site prior to purchase. The extent of this liability can be used as a bargaining tool in subsequent negotiations and checks for site suitability for the client's activities.

Case study 1: Environmental impact assessment review manufacturing facility.

The purpose of the environmental impact assessment review was to identify the quality of the statement produced in support of an application for the grant of planning consent for an incinerator close to an established manufacturing site. The client commissioned Safety, Environment and Quality Management Ltd (SEQM) as part of a team to review the implications for an existing operational site.

Following completion of the review the local planning authority were not required to make a decision on the application and revised proposals were introduced, which had little or no impact on our clients operations.

Case study 2: Waste minimisation audit for a financial Services company

The purpose of the waste minimisation audit was to identify opportunities within the organisation to reduce the amount of waste associated with each process. The organisation commissioned Safety, Environment and Quality Management Ltd (SEQM) to undertake a Waste Minimisation Audit to identify opportunities to Eliminate, Minimise and Reuse waste in preference to Recycling and Disposal and to estimate potential cost savings that can be made.

The following diagram illustrates the methodology that was used throughout the audit to help identify the paper based inputs and outputs to each process.

Each department was sub-divided into distinct processes with a responsible manager who then completed a questionnaire identifying the paper-based inputs and outputs.

A number of common themes emerged across all departments that presented the greatest opportunity for making savings. These are as follows:

• Computer Reports: Each department requires large numbers of reports that are printed by Computer Operations. It would be acceptable for many of these reports to be received in an electronic format.

• Duplicate forms: A wide range of standard forms is used in each department. Many forms have a number of carbon copies that are not required and therefore discarded.

• Printing errors: Much paper is wasted during printing. This occurs due to both human and computer error.

• Internal transfer of information: Information produced by one department is written down or printed and transferred to other departments.

• External transfer of information: Documents are printed in order to be faxed externally. Many sent faxes are then discarded.

There were in excess of 50 waste minimisation findings. There were other potential savings that were not possible to estimate at this stage.

Case study 3: Resource Efficiency project for European division of fast moving consumer goods organisation.

The purpose of this resource efficiency review was to identify opportunities within the organisation maximise the use of resources associated with each of its major production processes, which were based in various European countries.

The organisation commissioned Safety, Environment and Quality Management Ltd (SEQM) to undertake a Review; to identify opportunities to manage energy more efficiently; to reduce resource consumption and in particular water use, to eliminate, minimise and reuse waste.

On the basis of the findings the organisation prepared detailed action plans and created a set of performance indicators to measure resource efficiency performance.

The project was a component of a wider initiative to create certified systems, which comply with the requirements of an international environmental management system.
