Recent SEQM Consultancy Projects Include:

• Case Study 1: Environmental Impact Assessment for Kellogg

The purpose of the Environmental Impact Assessment review was to identify the quality of the statement produced in support of an application for the grant of planning consent for an incinerator close to an established manufacturing site. Kellogg commissioned SEQM as part of a team to review the implications of granting planning consent for an existing operational site.

Following completion of the review the local planning authority were not required to make a decision on the application and revised proposals were introduced, which had little or no impact on our client’s operations.

• Case Study 2: Waste Minimisation Audit for Northern Rock

The purpose of the Waste Minimisation Audit was to identify opportunities within the organisation to reduce the amount of waste associated with each process. Northern Rock commissioned SEQM to undertake a Waste Minimisation Audit to identify opportunities to Eliminate, Minimise and Reuse waste in preference to Recycling and Disposal, and to estimate potential resultant cost savings.

The following diagram illustrates the methodology used throughout the audit to help to identify the paper-based inputs and outputs associated with each process.

The organisation was divided into departments, and each department sub-divided into distinct processes, with responsible managers appointed to identify paper-based inputs and outputs.

Those themes common to all departments which presented the greatest opportunity for making savings were identified as follows:

  • Computer reports: Each department requires large numbers of reports that are printed by computer operations. It would be acceptable for many of these reports to be received in an electronic format.

  • Duplicate forms: A wide range of standard forms is used in each department. Many forms have a number of carbon copies that are not required and therefore discarded.

  • Printing errors: Much paper is wasted during printing. This occurs due to both human and computer error.

  • Internal transfer of information: Information produced by one department is written down or printed and transferred to other departments.

  • External transfer of information: Documents are printed in order to be faxed externally. Many sent faxes are then discarded.

There were in excess of fifty waste minimisation findings, as well as further potential savings that were not possible to estimate at this stage.

• Case Study 3: Resource Efficiency Project for Unilever

The purpose of the Resource Efficiency review was to identify opportunities within the organisation to maximise the use of resources associated with each of its major production processes, which were based in various European countries.

Unilever commissioned SEQM to: undertake a review; identify opportunities to manage energy more efficiently; reduce resource consumption, in particular water use; and eliminate, minimise and reuse waste.

On the basis of SEQM’s findings the organisation prepared detailed action plans and created a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure Resource Efficiency performance.

The project was a component of a wider initiative to create certified systems in compliance with the requirements of an international Environmental Management System.
